A

"I would say, no matter what people tell you, anything can happen." That's

the message Internet singer Austin Mahone says at We Day, an event for young people

in Canada.

2

When he was 14,Austin and a friend began uploading pop songs to musical

websites."I was just doing it because we had nothing to do, living in a small town."

"I'd check different websites for the hottest songs, and I'd record my own

videos," he explains. "That's how people began to find me online."His videos got

millions of hits and he signed with a record company. The result was the release

of Austin's first album, Junior Year. While it seems like a sudden rise for the

teenager, Austin admits the early days were not always fun. He says a lot of people

thought badly of him for posting his videos online. Yet this didn't put him off."I

kept working hard. "And the hits on his videos kept coming.

Austin's achievement and spirit make him a perfect fit for the message of We

Day. After all, Free the Children, the creator of the event, was founded to "enable

youth to make changes." Even Austin's unusual rise by way of the Internet fits with

the way Free the Children works and raises money.

Because of Austin, his four million followers will learn about Free the Children.

While Austin's presence certainly helps We Day, it's good for him, too. Austin gets

to show himself as someone who volunteers his time and talent for a worthy cause

and show that he cares about making the world a better place.

21.Why did Austin put pop songs on musical websites?

A. He was bored with his life there.

B.

To attract people's attention.

C. To help advertise the songs.

D. His friend asked him

to do so.

22.What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to ?

A. Austin's sudden rise.

B. People's

dissatisfaction.

C. The release of Junior Year.

D. Signing with a

record company.

23.What Austin did at We Day

.

A. was a win-win situation

B. set an example for all the singers

C. first made him become known to the public D. led many young people to be

volunteers

B

Is looking fashionable more important than being comfortable? Many people seem

to think so, judging by the things they wear. But fashion is not everything. It is

more important to be a healthy and good person.

People go to great lengths to be fashionable. Some people think they have to

have a certain body type, so they go on extreme, unhealthy diets in order to change

their bodies. In addition, many women wear uncomfortable fashions, such as

high-heeled shoes that create blisters and tight body shapers that limit blood flow.

3

Men and women alike spend time and money on products that change their natural hair color and use hot irons and blow dryers to curl or straighten their hair. Some people spend several hours a day in front of a mirror. Is fashion important enough to spend so much time and effort on changing how you look like?
If the purpose of fashion is to make a person feel good, it does not make sense that he or she would go through so much discomfort to be fashionable. Fashion should not come first. People should prioritize being healthy and positive. What people wear does not indicate anything about their personalities. Instead of spending hours choosing a suit, perhaps you should call your friends and do something together! Instead of going on strict diets and starving, why not eat some healthy foods and then exercise? By doing these things, you can keep a healthy lifestyle and truly grow as a person. 24. The author's main purpose in writing the text is to_______________.
A. show readers advantages and disadvantages of dieting B. persuade readers to value health more than fashion C. tell readers ways to become fashionable D. inform readers of the latest fashion trends 25. Which statement best represents the author’s opinion? A. Fashion can make people do some unhealthy things. B. Fashion increases famous people’s self-respect. C. When you look good, you feel good. D. People need to diet to lose weight. 26. Which of the following activities would the author most likely recommend? A. Shopping for fashionable clothes B. Starting a new diet with a friend C. Going skating with friends D. Changing the hairstyle every week
C Teens don't understand the big fuss (小题大做). As the first generation are to grow up in a wired world, they hardly know a time when computers weren't around, and they eagerly catch the chance to spend hours online, chatting with friends. So what? But researchers nationwide are increasingly worried that teens are becoming isolated, less skillful at person-to-person relationships, and perhaps numb to the cheating that is so much a part of the e-mail world. “And a teen's sense of self and values may be changed in a world where personal connections can be limitless,” said Shetty Turkle. Another researcher, Robert Kraut, said he's worried about the “opportunity costs” of so much online time for youths. He found that teens who used computers,
4

even just a few hours a week, showed increased signs of loneliness and social

isolation. “Chatting online may be better than watching television, but it's worse

than hanging out with real friends,” he said.

Today's teens, however, don't see anything strange in the fact that the computer

takes up a central place in their social lives. “School is busy and full of pressure.

There's almost no time to just hang out,” said Parker Rice, 17, “Talking online

is just to catch time.”

Teens say they feel good about what they say online or taking the time to think

about a reply. Some teens admit that asking someone for a date, or breaking up, can

be easier in the form of a message, though they don't want to do so. But they insist

there's no harm.

27. The researchers argue that

.

A. teens develop a different sense of values

B. nothing is wrong with teens' chatting online

C. teens can manage their social connections

D. spending hours online does much good to teens

28. The text mainly deals with

.

A. teens' pleasant online experience

B. teens' computer skills and schoolwork

C. the effects of the computer world on teens

D. different opinions on teens' chatting online

29. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Teens are more skillful at person-to-person relationships.

B. Teens showed decreasing signs of loneliness and social isolation.

C. Chatting online is worse than hanging out with real friends.

D. Asking someone for a date, or breaking up can be more difficult in the message

form.

30. The purpose of the text is to

.

A. describe computer research results

B. draw attention to teens' computer habits

C. suggest ways to deal with teens' problems

D. discuss problems teens have at school

第二节(共 5 个小题; 每小题 2 分, 满分 10 分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

City life is cool; but is country life cooler? Apparently yes.

The population of British cities has been falling for years. 31 Where are the

people going?

Answer: to the country.

People imagine that life in the country is slow and calm, that there are no

5

traffic jams, no pollution, and no crime. In some places, this is true, but in others it is not.
Small towns and villages are becoming more and more popular; people have more space and most houses have gardens. 32 Lots of people want to live in the country and work in the city, so more and more people travel long distances each day to go to work. Of course they don't use buses or trains; they use cars. 33 There is not enough to do; there are not enough activities and excitements.
Little villages now have traffic problems in the morning, just like big cities! And they are getting worse.
The problems are very complicated! If everyone moves into the country, large parts of the countryside will disappear! People leave cities and big towns to escape from urban problems. 34 On warm summer days, and cold winter days, air pollution can be a big problem in large parts of the south of England. Crime has become a serious problem in rural areas.
35 Soon Britain’s population will stop rising. From about the year 2020, it will perhaps start to fall. In 100 years' time, there will be less people in Britain than today--perhaps two million less. No doubt there will be less pollution too; oil and petrol will probably be rare by then. A. But problems are growing. B. Perhaps there is hope for the future. C. But Britain's population is still growing. D. People like the local scenery of the country. E. But they are bringing their problems with them. F. Besides, lots of young people say that life in the country is boring. G. It is free from the noise and air pollution and traffic jams of the city. 第三部分 语言运用(共两小节,满分 45 分) 第一节 完型填空(共 20 题,每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分)

Scientists say it's all because of our genes. They interviewed 500 people and asked them questions about 58 (they)lifestyle, for example, what time of day they 59 (prefer) to do exercise and 60 difficult they found it to wake up in the
7

morning. Scientists then compared their answers to the people's DNA. They discovered that we all have a" clock" gene, also 61 (call)a Period 3
gene. This gene can be long or short. People who have the long gene are very good in the morning, but get 62 (tire) quite early at night. People who have the short gene are more active at night but have problems 63 (wake) up early in the morning. How does it help us to know if we have the long 64 short gene? Scientists say that, if possible, we should try to change our working hours to fit our "body clock?" If you are a "morning person", then you could start work early and finish early. But if you are bad in the morning, then it might be better 65 (start) work in the afternoon and work until late at night. So maybe, instead of nine to five it should be seven to three or twelve to eight. 第四部分 写作(共两节,满 分 40 分) 第一节 应用文写作(满分 15 分)

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。 If there was one thing you could make parents understand about kids, what would it be? That is one of the questions TFK and KidsHealth.org recently asked in an anonymous(匿名的) survey conducted online. More than 8,000 kids answered.“We just want to spend time with you,” said a 12-year-old child.“At 13,you can't treat me like I'm 6,”another kid said. An 11-year-old child wrote,“Being a kid is a lot harder than it looks.” The kids who took our survey made it clear that they want to feel close to the important people in their life—their mum,dad and other caring adults. But their answers also show that it is not always easy to deal with these close relationships. Many kids—two out of three—said they get along pretty well or very well with their parents.About four out of five kids told us that they have fun with their parents. But that doesn't mean they never disagree. In fact, most kids reported arguing with their parents,at least sometimes.“It's absolutely normal to disagree and argue,” says D'Arcy Lyness,a child psychologist.“But it's also important to learn how to do so respectfully.” About half of the kids said they are doing that. When they disagree with their parents, they say they discuss issues calmly. But two out of five kids said arguments tend to involve yelling at each
8

other.Lyness points out that shouting never helps.“Speak up,and let your parents know your ideas and your opinions,” she advises.“But be patient.Don't use a raised, angry voice.”
Kids made it clear that they would rather avoid conflict altogether. Not surprisingly, three out of four kids admitted lying at times. Many said they lie to avoid getting in trouble or disappointing their parents.According to Lyness, lying isn't just wrong. It can actually get negative results.Telling the truth builds trust.“When parents can trust you, they are more likely to give you more freedom and more privileges,” she says.
